Winter Weight Gain

Winter Weight Gain

Winter weight gain

I often see dogs in the spring that have gained weight over the winter.  Being overweight is bad for dogs just like it is for us.  When the weather is cold or the sidewalks are icy, and you can’t take your dog out for his normal exercise he isn’t burning off as many calories.  If he continues to eat the same amount of calories as usual he will probably gain weight.  Switching to a light food or feeding a smaller amount of food will help avoid winter weight gain when he isn’t getting the normal amount of exercise.

It is a good idea to look at your dog each time you feed him.  If he looks fat don’t feed him as much as usual.  Ideally you should be able to easily feel the ribs with a little fat cover.  If he is too thin feed him more.
